Teaching
without learning is useless. When we are teaching English
but our students are not learning the language, it seems that we are doing
nothing. As English teachers we should make our students learn English when we
teach the language. If our purpose is how
to make our students learn English effectively, we have to know how our
students learn the language; we have to know what strategies which make them
learn the language more effectively and what strategies which make them learn
it less effectively. To identify the strategies affecting their learning, we
have to portray the strategies they employ when we teach them English. Departing from the question of what measurement to be used to
identify how Indonesian learners use English learning strategies, a
questionnaire has been developed for students in EFL settings. Language
Learning Strategy Questionnaire or the LLSQ introduced here is a questionnaire
we can use to portray the strategies that Indonesian students use in learning
English. Through this questionnaire we can explore effective learning strategies
that our students employ and, in turn, we can make our students do better
learning by providing appropriate tasks to trigger them to be successful language
learners.
